Wednesday 29 March
Timings: 12.00 - 1.15pm
Dr Robert McKenzie currently leads a research project investigating attitudes towards accents spoken in the North and South of England, including how accent bias can affect individuals in all aspects of their life, including their careers – with some people actively suppressing or “softening” their accents in order to be treated differently in the workplace. Although most of us know a wide range of colleagues with differing accents, the impact of “accentism” in the workplace is not well understood by many. Robert will provide an overview of his research and the way in which the findings can be applied to workplace practices, including recruitment.
