Employment Law Update - London

This ever-popular UHR development day focuses on the topic of employment law, covering recent and forthcoming developments and in particular how they relate to higher education.   

 Attendance is free of charge to HR staff from UHR member institutions. 

 Presenter: Philip Lott - Solicitor and Employment Law Specialist.  Philip is a gifted and entertaining speaker who uses a variety of means including audience participation and interactive quizzes to challenge and teach delegates about the law as it affects their institutions.

This event will be useful both to experienced HR practitioners who wish to hone the finer points of their employment law knowledge or pursue tricky queries which have been vexing them, and also to less experienced colleagues or those new to the sector who need an overview of employment law as it affects HE.

10.15 - 10.20 am:         Welcome

10.20 - 11.30 am:       Session 1 -  Employment Law Quiz  

After a brief nod to some quirky ‘Cases of the Year’ (including the oldest ever claimant for age discrimination), we will plunge into the traditional light-hearted quiz/workshop. This will highlight topical HR issues which may have slipped under our ‘radar’, including:

• The Government’s implementation of the ‘Good Work’ Report;
• The Labour Party’s dramatic proposals;
• When does a notice of dismissal take effect?;
• Is it unlawful to ‘undermine’ collective bargaining?
• In variation of contracts, can silence imply acceptance?;
• Should you include untested allegations when giving a reference?; 

- and (an evergreen favourite)

• Vicarious liability - trouble at the office party….

11.45 - 1.15 pm:        Session 2 - Current Developments

A concise, but comprehensive, guide to both current and forthcoming developments in Employment Law. We will review:

• Protection of - and changes to - employment rights after ‘Brexit’;
• Consultation on ‘Non-Disclosure Agreements’;
• The Government’s plans for new employment legislation;
• Two cases challenging University compulsory retirements;
• The latest cases on the status of zero-hours and ‘gig economy’ workers;
• Whether statutory holiday pay must include voluntary overtime;

                   - and (perhaps ironically):

• The EU’s latest proposals on employment rights.

2.00 - 2.30 pm           Session 3 - The ‘Bare Necessities’ Quiz

                                How solid is your grasp of basic employment law? Our quick-fire, self-assessed quiz offers 20 questions, with a possible 50 points. And, of course, points mean…..

2.30 - 3.15pm            Session 4 - The Law of References

Our final session examines the knotty issues of references - such as:

• Do you have to give a reference, if requested?;
• What you can - and can’t - include;
• Your potential liability for an inaccurate - or misleading - reference;
• Can a reference be ‘too good’?
• Data Protection issues: can individuals now claim access to their references? and
• References and equality issues.
