UHR CUPA Bursary Winner to attend conference in San Diego

UHR is delighted to support an HR professional in mid-career, to attend the annual CUPA-HR conference, this year in San Diego, California, from 16 to 18 September. This development opportunity includes UHR funding conference attendance and further support to visit a local university.

The selection panel were unanimous in their decision to award the first UHR CUPA bursary to Sophie Harris, Deputy Director of Human Resources at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

UHR Chair Sandra Heidinger said, “Sophie has clearly thought through how to get traction for UHR at the CUPA conference in September 2017, and has undertaken impressive pre-work for a study visit where she plans to explore female academic progression and how institutions in the US enable women in particular to overcome barriers to achieve tenure and then full professorial status. In particular, she is keen to find out what we can learn in the UK from the approaches being taken in the US to tackle gender disparities.

Sophie also set out clear, focused and structured plans for before, during and after the conference in San Diego, in terms of what she intends to gain from the visit, and how that can be effectively shared with and benefit her own institution, and the HR profession within higher education.”

CUPA-HR President and CEO Andy Brantley said, “I think UHR’s career support idea is outstanding… and look forward to welcoming Sophie to our conference in San Diego”.

Sophie will be blogging about her study visit on the UHR blog, so do take a look to keep up with her progress.
